Overview

Treatment Options

Risks or Complications

Although many patients recover fully, untreated or severe pericarditis may lead to potentially serious complications. Excess fluid accumulation around the heart can interfere with its ability to pump effectively, a condition known as cardiac tamponade that requires immediate medical attention. Recurrent pericarditis may cause repeated episodes of chest pain and inflammation. In rare cases, chronic inflammation can result in constrictive pericarditis, where the pericardium becomes thickened and scarred, restricting normal heart function. Early diagnosis, appropriate treatment, and regular follow-up significantly reduce the risk of these complications.
