Heart failure is a chronic cardiovascular condition in which the heart is unable to pump blood efficiently enough to meet the body’s needs. Chest X-rays help detect fluid accumulation in the lungs, and advanced imaging such as cardiac CT, cardiac MRI, or coronary angiography may be recommended when underlying coronary artery disease or structural abnormalities are suspected. These evaluations enable accurate diagnosis and guide personalized treatment planning.
Heart failure treatment focuses on relieving symptoms, improving heart function, preventing disease progression, and reducing the risk of hospitalization. Lifestyle modifications, including maintaining a heart-healthy diet, limiting salt intake, controlling fluid consumption when advised, regular physical activity, and smoking cessation, form an important part of treatment. Medications are prescribed to improve cardiac function, regulate blood pressure, reduce fluid overload, and decrease strain on the heart.
For patients with blocked coronary arteries, interventional cardiology procedures such as coronary angioplasty and stent placement can restore blood flow and improve heart function. In selected cases, implantable devices such as pacemakers or implantable cardioverter-defibrillators (ICDs) may be recommended to manage abnormal heart rhythms and improve cardiac performance. Advanced heart failure may require specialized therapies, including cardiac resynchronization therapy, ventricular assist devices, or heart transplantation in carefully selected patients. Treatment is individualized based on the patient’s condition, underlying cause, and overall health.
Successful management of heart failure requires ongoing follow-up and long-term commitment to treatment. Patients are encouraged to take medications exactly as prescribed, attend regular cardiology appointments, monitor blood pressure, and keep track of daily body weight to detect early signs of fluid retention. Following dietary recommendations, maintaining a healthy weight, engaging in appropriate exercise, and managing conditions such as diabetes and hypertension significantly improve long-term outcomes. Cardiac rehabilitation programs may also help patients safely regain strength, improve physical fitness, and adopt healthier lifestyle habits while reducing the likelihood of future complications.
If left untreated or poorly controlled, heart failure can progressively worsen and lead to serious complications. These may include recurrent hospital admissions, severe fluid accumulation in the lungs, kidney dysfunction, liver damage, abnormal heart rhythms, blood clot formation, stroke, and worsening valve disease. Advanced heart failure may significantly reduce quality of life and increase the risk of sudden cardiac death. Regular monitoring and timely medical intervention are essential to minimize these risks and maintain optimal heart function.
